Why Are My Brakes Squeaking
Have you noticed a strange sound from your car? Do you find yourself wondering: Why are my brakes squeaking? We’re here to help. At Andy Mohr Hyundai, we talked to our technicians about what can cause brakes to squeak, and came back with the answers you need.
Dust & Sand
Have you been off-roading, or driving on sand? These are often two major culprits behind squeaking brakes. Luckily, a quick cleaning is usually all you need to get back to top condition.
Weather
Has the weather outside been frightful? Rain, snow, sleet, and mud can all play a part in making your brakes squeel. Be sure to check for any damage or rust, and clean out any obstructions you find.
Heavy Loads
Heavy loads can put major pressure on your brakes. As the heat in the parts builds up, they can start to swell. The end result? Noisy brakes. Keeping your loads a little lighter or downshifting can help with this.
Strain From Driving
If you frequently go down very steep roads, you’re giving your brakes a real workout. All that stress and strain can add up to your brakes squeaking. Lightening up on the gears or giving your car a brake from steep paths can help fix this issue.
Harder Pads
You might be used to quiet brakes, but newer models often rely on harder brake pads. This adds up to a far safer ride, but sometimes a side effect is a persistent squeaking. Check if there are any brake lubricants or anti-squeal adhesive options that would be right for you.
Semi-Metallic Brake Pads
This popular style has many advantages; however, they are known to squeak more than other types of brake pads. Non-Asbestos Organic (NAO) brake pads are significantly quieter; they also have reduced heat and vibration. The only downside is that they tend to wear out faster than semi-metallic brake pads.
Ceramic brake pads are another great option for drivers who want a quieter ride. These have the added bonus not producing any rust or dust, meaning these brake pads require less maintenance than other versions.
Overnight Moisture
If your car sounds particularly squeaky in the morning, it might be due to overnight moisture. Rain, dew, and weather conditions can all conspire to cause rust to appear on your brake rotors.
If you suspect this may be the cause, cleaning off the rust is a fast and easy solution. And remember, if you can keep your car indoors overnight -- especially in less than ideal weather -- it will drive better come morning.
