You’ve had your leased vehicle for three years, and it’s time to bring it back to the dealership. But you wouldn’t return an appliance to the store without making sure it was in working order, and the same is true for your leased vehicle.

Schedule Your Inspection

Many manufacturers insist that you get an inspection done 90 days prior to returning, so don’t leave this task until the last minute. An inspection will go over all the things the lease owner is going to look for, such as:

• Service Indicator Lights.
• Tires with 1/8-Inch or Less of Tread.
• More Than Three Dings on a Single Body Panel.

When the inspection is completed, you’ll be given a report that lists the things that need to be taken care of. From here you can either pay for the technicians to amend these things, or, if you’re the do-it-yourself type, you can bring your vehicle home and bust out the tool kit.

Don’t Overlook the Details

Armed with your inspection report, getting the car detailed is often in your best interest. This will help buff out any scratched paint and pop out any dents you may have gotten when you opened the door too excitedly at the grocery store.

Don’t neglect the inside of your vehicle. Detailers can take care of any rips or tears that the lease owner could charge extra for. They can even take care of that stubborn stain from where you knocked your full cup of coffee from the drive thru onto the floorboards.

Gather All Your Documents

Before you head into the dealership to return your leased vehicle and pick out your next one, make sure you have all your documents in order. Put them all in the same place and set yourself a reminder to grab them before you drive off. You’ll need:

• A Copy of Your Lease Contract.
• Your Owner’s Manual.
• Your Maintenance Guide.

You’ll also have to return everything that came with your initial lease, like key fobs and any electric vehicle chargers or cables. Make sure you have everything when you go to return the car, or you might have to pay an additional fee to have those things replaced.

While you’re at it, make sure you remove all your personal things from the vehicle as well. It’s so easy to forget things in seatback pockets or in the glove compartment, so make a list of all the places you might have stashed things and check them one by one.
